This month we invite you to meet ...
Monique, Store Manager at Bitters
"After having my first child in 1979, in an effort to lose the baby weight, I joined an aerobics class. That became a big part of my weekly routine for several years, so much so, I became an instructor. Ended up teaching until my last child came along in 1989. At that point, I was a stay-at-home mom and college student, then walking for exercise. With not much time, it became a run/walk each day, just to fit it all in.
Joining a gym soon followed, and at a friend’s suggestion, I ran my first 5K! Of course I was instantly hooked. Hard to replace that runner’s high you get. One thing led to another and we signed up for the Austin Half Marathon. That was in 2003. Running that first half, I questioned why I ever thought I wanted to do this, but then immediately when it was over, couldn’t wait to sign up for my next race! Since then, I’ve run countless 5K’s, 10K’s, half and full marathons, including long distance relays.
Through the run program at Lifetime, I became friends with Mitch and Michele in 2011. I’d been looking for a change in careers, just not certain what that would be, and as it turned out, they had a position open at their Stone Oak store. What a perfect fit for me! The opportunity to share my passion with others and work with a great team has been so rewarding.
I’ve now been with iRun for two and a half years and just moved into the store manager position at our second store, Bitters. I’m also a certified running coach and am active throughout the year training others. Watching runners reach their goals, whether it’s their first race, or their 20th, is just priceless, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds as we begin a new year!"
Favorite Place to Run:
That’s an easy answer. Locally, running from the Pearl downtown has to be my favorite. It’s just beautiful. And right in our own backyard. Whenever I do travel, a pair of running shoes always comes along too. Running makes discovering new places even more fun! Most recently, running in Florida this summer was hard to beat. And I can now say that that’s one place it’s way more humid than home!
Favorite race fuel:
Gu Peanut Butter/Chocolate and Cherry Limeade Nuun.
Favorite Running Shoe:
Since early 2014, my go-to shoe has been the Adidas Energy Boost. The amount of cushioning and its responsiveness is perfect.
Favorite Pre-Race Meal:
Stir fried rice with chicken or shrimp. My favorite. Just the right amount of carbs/protein to keep me going.
Favorite Post-Race Meal and Where:
Not any one thing in particular. Coffee and breakfast/brunch rank very high on my list though.
My favorite race? There isn’t just one, but running the Gulf Coast Independent Relay from New Orleans to Pensacola with a team (288 miles) was quite memorable and such fun. After all, who doesn’t want to spend three days traveling in a van??? Can’t wait to do that one again.

Favorite Running Quote:
“Every morning in Africa, a gazelle wakes up," Bannister said. "It knows it must outrun the fastest lion, or it will be killed. Every morning in Africa, a lion wakes up. It knows it must run faster than the slowest gazelle, or it will starve. It doesn't matter whether you're a lion or a gazelle - when the sun comes up, you'd better be running.”
― Christopher McDougall
Favorite Song on your Running Play List:
I don’t run with music these days. You miss so much when you do!
Anything by Brooks or Oiselle
Favorite Work Out:
Speed work at the track. Love those repeats!
