Running - It's Good for You!
Isn't it great when something you like to do is good for you. Whether you'd like a reason to keep on running or one to start, here's a list of just a few reasons why running (or walking) is good for you.
- Improved cardiovascular fitness. Running lowers blood pressure. It helps the arteries maintain elasticity because the arteries expand and contract 3X as much as when you are sedentary. It lowers the risk of heart attack and stroke, increases good cholesterol, decreases bad cholesterol, and lowers triglyceride levels (chemical form of fat in your body.)
- Weight loss/maintenance. Running requires a great deal of energy and therefore burns many calories.
- Running slows down the aging process. Because the bones grow and become stronger to respond to the physical demands of running, people are less likely to experience bone and muscle loss as they age.
- Running helps to alleviate stress. Hormones called endorphins are released when you run. Running also gives you a sense of accomplishment and takes you away from the stressors of your life.
